Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga Temple
About Bhimashankar Temple
The 13th century is when the original sanctum first appeared. Various renovations were done on the complex during different time periods. It is said that a woodcutter by the name of Bhatirao Lakhadhara discovered the Jyotirlinga in the 13th century when the earth began to bleed when his axe struck a tree. The bleeding was stopped when the locals gathered there and gave the tree milk. The people of the village built a tiny temple at the location and christened it the Bhimashankar Temple.

Numerous well-known people, including Chhatrapati Shivaji, Peshwa Balaji Vishwanath, and Raghunath Peshwa, frequented the shrine and performed poojas and renovations there. The Shikhar of the Bhimashankar temple was constructed by Nana Phadnavis, the Diwan of the Peshwas.
Bhimashankar Temple significance
One of the 12 Jyotirlingas is the Linga of Lord Shiva. Unlike the Lingas that were established by humans, these Jyotirlingas were self-manifested manifestations of Lord Shiva. These Jyotirlingas are supposedly where Shiva first manifested as a blazing column of light. In the main sanctum, the Bhimashankar Linga is situated at a lower level than the ground. A small groove in the Linga divides the top of the Linga. The Linga’s two halves stand for Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, respectively. In the temple of Bhimashankar, the Lord is represented as “Ardhanareeshwara.” Water has supposedly been flowing constantly from the Linga since the beginning of time.
People revere the River Bhima as sacred because they think it contains Lord Shankara’s (Shiva’s) sweat from his victory over the demon Tripurasura. The Maharishi Kaushik, also known as Brahmarishi Vishwamitra, is said to have undertaken Tapasya, or penance, in the Mokshakund, which is situated behind the Bhimashankar temple. The temple administration permits visitors to perform Abhishekam and Poojas on their own using marigold and bilva leaves at the Jyotirlinga.
