About Bhutanatha Temple
One of the main attractions of Badami, a historic town in the Bagalkot region of Karnataka, is the Bhutanatha collection of temples. The Early Chalukyan Dynasty was centred on this little town, which was formerly known as Vatapi.

The History
Two significant temples are part of the Bhutanatha complex of temples; one is located on the east side of the Agasthya Tirtha or Agasthya Lake and the other on the north-east side. On the eastern side of the Agasthya Tirtha stands the Bhutanatha temple. It is one of South India’s oldest instances of a structural temple. When Badami was known as the Chalukya capital of Vatapi, this temple was constructed. The western Kalyani Chalukyas made later extensions.
For a while, the Jains had an impact on the Bhutanatha collection of temples. Later, the Lingayats took control and built a Shiva Linga in the shrine and a Nandi in front. The Mallikarjuna Temple is located on the lake’s northeastern shore. It was constructed under the rule of the Western Chalukyas and is from a later era.
The Architecture :
Temple of Bhutanatha The well-known Bhutanatha temple, constructed in the manner of the early Eastern Chalukyas, is located on the east bank of the Agasthya Tirtha. The design is a synthesis of early South Indian and North Indian temple architecture. It appears that this temple was constructed in two phases. The style of the eastern Badami Chalukyas is reflected in the inner hall and shrine, whilst the western Kalyani Chalukyas are represented by the outer hall. Massive pillars support the inner hall, and lotus patterns are painted on the bays. Goddess Ganga is seated on a makara on one side of the shrine’s entryway, while the Yamuna River is on the other. The tortoise is shown with her riding it. The Shiva Linga in the shrine is thought to have been added by the Lingayats at a later time.
