About Brahma Temple, Carambolim
According to legend, Pushkar, in Rajasthan, would be the only temple that Brahma, the architect of the Hindu sacred trinity, would ever have. There is another Brahma temple, however it is less well known, and it is hidden away in the Goan village of Nagargao in the Valpoi district.
“The figure of Brahma in this temple is tall and graceful. All who visit the statue of Lord Brahma receive his blessings. The 12th century is when the exquisitely chiselled figure of Brahma was created, and it is from the Kadamba era.
Being the original sculpture carved out of a black stone during the Kadamba era lends significance to this temple and its Brahma statue. The statue of Lord Brahma, who is in the centre of the temple, is beardless. Brahma is shown as the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, known as the Trimurti.Goan historians claim that when the Portuguese seized the island of Tiswadi in the 16th century, there was dread for the temple’s destruction. As a result, in 1541, Brahma followers smuggled the god from Karmali hamlet in Old Goa and secretly transported it to the Sattari taluka, which at the time was not under Portuguese administration.
Till 1781, Sattari Taluka was governed by the Portuguese. The worshippers then transported the statue to the village of Valpoi and from there to a densely forested area near Nagargaon, where they placed it in a little shrine beside a stream. The name Brahma Karmali was given to this tiny hamlet in honour of the god Brahma and the place of its origin, Karmali (in the Tiswadi taluka).
