Guruvayoor Krishna Temple
About Guruvayoor Krishna Temple
One of Kerala’s most revered pilgrimage centres is the Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple, which is situated in the town of Guruvayoor. The Balkrishna Avtar of the ruling deity Lord Vishnu is worshipped in one of South India’s most revered temples. Lord idol, also known as Unnikrishnan, is adorned with four hands, each holding a conch, a mace, a discus, and a lotus. The Lord appears in full glory blessing the devotees while wearing the Tulasi or Basil Garland and a pearl necklace.
The temple was built by the gods’ preceptors, Guru and Vayu, the god of the winds, according to a legend. Instead of using the more common materials of stone or metal, which were used more frequently in earlier times, the amazing idol of Lord Unnikrishnan Guruvayur is made of a rare mixture called Padala Anjanam. Even though it is built simply, this location’s unrivalled spiritual allure draws visitors from across the nation. There may be long lines at the entrance, but they will be worth it once you enter the temple complex as this temple is only accessible to Hindu believers.

History
According to legend, the Guruvayoor Temple was founded in 1638 AD and promoted as one of Kerala’s main pilgrimage sites by its followers Poonthanam, Melpattur, Vilvamangalam, Prince Manadevan (Zamorin), and Kururamma. The temple, which had been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times, continued to stand tall and in all of its splendour until a disastrous fire broke out in 1970. With the aid of individuals from all religious backgrounds who helped put out the 5-hour-long fire, the Vigraha and the sub-shrines of Ayyappa, Devi, and Ganesha, as well as the flag staff, were preserved. The temple continues to stand tall, blessing all of its followers.
The Architecture:
With two gopurams facing east (Kizhakkenada) and west (Vastu Vidya), Guruvayur Temple is constructed in the traditional architectural style of Kerala (Paringjarenada). The eastern Nada serves as the shrine’s main entrance. In the outer enclosure, or Chuttambalam, you will see a 33.5 m high, gold-plated flag post known as the Dwajasthambam. When lit, the stunning 7 m tall Deepsthambam with its thirteen circular receptacles is a sight to behold. The main deity’s idol, known as the Sreekovil, is made of a rare mixture called Padala Anjanam rather than stone or metal, making it the most striking aspect of the temple.
