About The India Gate
One of the most prominent memorials created in honour of the Indian officers who were ruthlessly slain in the North West region during the First World War is India Gate, which is located on Rajpath.
The capital city’s hub is where India Gate is located.
Only 2.3 kilometres separate it from Rashtrapati Bhavan, the president of India’s residence, which is located on the far eastern end of the holy street Rajpath.
India Gate’s History
The All India War Memorial was the previous name for the India Gate.
In honour of the 82,000 men who died while serving the British Empire in World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War, it was built.
The Undivided Indian Army was not complete without these valiant troops.
The Imperial War Graves Commission (IWGC), a project initiated by the British Imperial Mandate, undertook the construction of the edifice in 1917.
On February 10, 1921, the Duke of Connaught lay the cornerstone, and Indian Army personnel were present for the occasion.
The project was finished in 1931, and on February 12th, 1931, it was officially opened.
Lord Irwin, the Viceroy at the time, officially opened the building.
It serves as both a war memorial and a representation of India’s diverse cultural traditions.
The Architecture
The memorial’s foundational stone was set by the late Edwin Lutyens, the architect of India Gate. The magnificent monument is 42 metres high and honours the 90,000 Indian Army Bravehearts who gave their lives fighting for the nation during the First World War and the 1919 Afghan Conquest. Sandstone is used to construct the entire construction, and the curve’s heights are 136 inches and 87.6 inches, respectively. The entrance that was constructed in New Delhi is known as India Gate. The names of the officers are inscribed on the memorial’s dividers.
A perpetual fire known as the Amar Jawan Jyoti burns in memory of the Amar Jawan beside the partitions. Additionally, he is recognised for creating the designs for 66 war memorials in Europe.
