Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga Temple
About Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga
The most well-known of the 12 jyotirlingas is Vishweshwar or Vishwanath, which is regarded as one of the world’s holiest sites. Meaning “Ruler of the World or Universe,” Vishwanath.
The Puranas are where this temple is first mentioned.
Qutb-ud-din-Aibak destroyed it in 1194 AD, and subsequent invasions over the decades included Mughal ruler Aurangazeb in 1669, who constructed a mosque there.
The Mughal emperor Akbar’s commander Raja Man Singh and his financial minister Raja Todar Mal were among the monarchs that rebuilt it.
Rani Ahilya Bai Holkar of Indore, the Maratha ruler, erected the current building on a nearby location in 1777.
Speciality of the Temple
At the heart of the sanctuary, on a silver altar, is the jyotirlinga. Other deities including Vishnu, Vinayaka, Kalabhairav, and Saneeshwara have shrines of their own.
The knowledge well, or jnana vapi, is a well that is located inside the temple. The linga is thought to have been secreted here when the Mughals arrived to destroy the temple.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who dominated the Indian subcontinent’s northwest, provided gold for plating the spire, or shikhara, in 1835. Tourists refer to it as the “Golden Temple of Varanasi” because its three domes are gold-plated.
Story of Kashi Vishwanath
It is thought that Lord Shiva once resided here, but his mother-in-law disapproved of his residence. Lord Shiva asked the demon Nikumbha to make the land in Kashi appropriate for his family in order to delight his spouse, Goddess Parvati. Because Parvati was so happy with the house, she gave food to everyone and as a result, she is revered as Annapurna or Annapoorani. Even Lord Shiva is said to be seated in front of her with a begging bowl, asking for food.
