About Mahabaleshwar Temple
Gokarna, a charming little town in the Uttar Kannada region of Karnataka, is well known for its immaculate beaches and historic temples. One of the most popular temples in the town is the Mahabaleshwar Temple in Gokarna. Lord Shiva is honoured at this shrine.
Particularly because of the legendary traditions and history connected to it, this ancient temple in the state is loved by pilgrims. The Ramayana and the Mahabharata, two Hindu epics, both make reference to the temple.
Dakshin Kashi is the name given to the temple since it is seen to be just as devout as the northern Indian pilgrimage site of Kashi (Kashi of the South).
Gokarna’s Mahabaleshwar Temple is crucial in giving the coastal town its status as a major pilgrimage destination. The Lord Mahabaleshwar temple honours Lord Shiva in the form of Lord Mahabaleshwar.
The 6 foot tall Atma Linga that is situated within the shrine on a square, black stone dais (Shaligrama Peetha) with a hole in the middle inspired the temple’s name. Up until the day of Ashta Bandana Kumbhahishekam, which occurs once every 40 years, worshipers may only view the top of the linga in partiality.
The temple’s primary deity is a historic stone sculpture of Lord Shiva that dates back more than 1500 years.
It’s interesting to note that the temple’s position, facing west and bordered by the Karwar beach on the Arabian Sea, is said to be more fortunate. According to tradition, pilgrims must bathe at the seashore, make obeisance at the nearby Maha Ganapati Temple, and then enter the Mahabaleshwar Temple.
Significantly, the temple is regarded as one of Karnataka’s seven Mukti Sthala temples, or “places of salvation.” Udupi, Subrahmanya, Kollur, Kumbasi Sankaranarayana, and Koteshvara are the locations of the remaining six Mukti Sthalas. Hindu worshippers frequently carry out the last rites for their departed family members at the Mahabaleshwar Temple.
During the Maha Shivratri, the temple is exceptionally busy with thousands of worshippers.

Architecture & Sculptures
Be warned that the Gokarna Mahabaleshwar Temple can take a history and archaeology enthusiast on a time-traveling adventure back to the 4th century CE, during the reign of King Mayurasharma of the Kadamba Dynasty, when the temple was built. The granite architecture proudly displays the classical Dravidian style of construction and design.
The Mahabaleshwar Temple at Gokarna is flanked by shrines to Maha Ganapati, Thamira Gowri (Goddess Parvati), Chandikeswara, Aadi Gokarneswara, Gokarnanayagi, and Dattatreya in addition to the massive Atma Lingam contained within the Shaligrama Peetha and the stone sculpture of Lord Shiva.
The Legend Gokarna :
If tales are to be believed, the genuine Atma Linga of Lord Shiva from its original residence at Mount Kailash in the Himalayas has been misplaced and is now housed at the Mahabaleshwar Temple in Gokarna.
According to legend, Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, undertook a protracted penance to appease Lord Shiva when the monarch’s mother revealed a deep desire to worship Lord Shiva’s original Atma Linga. Ravana’s honest attempts at penance pleased Lord Shiva, who granted his devotee’s two requests.
Both Boons :
First, in accordance with Ravana’s request, the Lord gave him his Atma Linga, with the caveat that he not place it on the ground. If it weren’t dumped, it would get permanently enmeshed in the earth.
In addition, Lord Shiva chose to send his wife, Uma, away with Ravana in order to fulfil the king’s second request for a spouse as attractive as Uma, as there was no one else who could compare to Uma.
