About Narsimha Jharna Mandir, Karnataka
Bidar, Karnataka is home to the Narasimha Jharni temple, sometimes referred to as the Narasimha Jharni cave temple. It is connected to the Hindu god Vishnu’s incarnation (avatar), Lord Narasimha. The ancient temple was discovered in an excavation that dug a 300 m tunnel beneath the Manichoola hill range, some 4.8 km from the city.
To see the deity’s picture formed on the laterite wall at the end of the tunnel, an architectural wonder, one must wade into the cave where water depths range from 4 to 5 feet. Bats can be spotted flying through the tunnel and dangling from the cave’s top. It’s amazing that the bats have never caused harm to anyone. The mantras govinda-govinda and narasimha hari-hari are recited by devotees. The sanctum sanctorum, which houses Lord Narasimha and a Shiva Linga that the demon Jharasura (Jalasura) had worshipped, located at the end of the cave temple.
There isn’t much room inside, yet eight people can stand and take enjoy this magnificent spectacle. Others must wait for their turn in the water. The water is not always crystal clean since it is in constant flow and because people are walking on it. On shoulders, people carry children inside the temple. The water contains sulphur and is thought to offer healing effects for those with skin issues. Particularly many couples looking to start families frequent this temple. Since this temple is unique, the total experience may be exciting and adventurous.
The Legend:
Lord Vishnu protected the young devotee Prahlada, who was subjected to unending torture by his demon father Hiranyakashipu for repeating the name of God rather than his own. But Prahlada endured all of these afflictions with unwavering love. Finally, Hiranyakashipu was murdered by God, who then manifested as a Man-Lion. God places a strong focus on dedication in this Man-Lion incarnation.
