Sri Chennakeshava Temple, Belur
History of Chennakeshava Temple
Velapuri was the previous name of Belur, a tiny town on the Yagachi River. The Sultans of Delhi captured and destroyed the Hoysalas’ capital at Dwarasamudra (Halebid), therefore that city was chosen as the Hoysalas’ new seat of government. In the middle of the thirteenth century, the Hoysalas held power here. The Sri Chennakeshava Swamy Temple is located 38 kilometres from Belur Hassan on the Yagachi River’s banks. It is a well-known tourist site worldwide. The Hoysalas’ former capital was Belur.
Throughout the legends, Velapur has also been referred to as Velur and Belhur. The city’s Sri Chennakeshava Swamy Temple is well-known. One of the best displays of Hoysala craftsmanship can be found here. The revered Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana dedicated the temple, also known as Vijaya Narayana, to commemorate his triumph over the Cholas in 1116 AD.
The Architecture
Hoysala architecture is used to build the Chennakeshava Temple, which is located on the banks of the Kaveri River. This Hoysala temple is also constructed on a high platform, like all others. This temple has three shrines; it is called Trikuta. Three temples are symmetrically placed within the 16-pointed star-shaped temple. Everyone has a plane, along with Sukanasi. Lord Keshava, Lord Janardhana, and Lord Venugopal had idols in all three temples. There are currently only two idols in the temple. Or Lord Keshav’s idol is missing.
Three exquisitely sculpted peaks rise from the mandapa. The temple includes two attics that are separated by carved minarets. The temple’s exterior walls have also been beautifully carved. Star-shaped folds and several intricately carved stone plates may be seen on the walls. Hindu religious text, such as the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Childhood of Lord Krishna, is carved onto the walls to beautify them. The sixteen various styles of roofs at the Chennakeshava temple are another appealing aspect.
Lord Chennakeshava Story
During his overnight stay in the Baba Budan forest, King Vishnuvardhana had a dream about Lord Keshav. and decided to have the Channa Keshava temple constructed in Belur. He unintentionally cut off the Lord’s bride, who dwelt on Baba Budan hill, from him. According to legend, the Lord frequently travels to the highlands to appease his wife. For this reason, the neighbourhood cobblers daily deposit a brand-new pair of sandals on the temple altar. The people think that after being offered to the deity, the sandals vanish.
