About Thalassery Narasimha Temple, Kerala
The Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Temple is situated in the centre of Thalassery, Kerala’s Kannur district. The distinguishing characteristic of the temple and prathishta is that they face north. The temple was built in the year AD 1831. In this Vishnu temple, Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy is the presiding deity. The temple flag is raised on the Dhwaja Stambha, or flag staff, at the entrance during Brahma Rathotsava. The three main holidays observed in this temple are Navarathri, Brahma Rathotsava, and Karthik Pournami. Goud Saraswat Brahmin priests who have been serving the community for centuries carry out all of the sevas. Only these priests—known as Archakas or Bhat—have the authority to approach and serve the Lord.
In the latter half of the 17th century, a small group of Goud Saraswat Brahmans moved from Goa to Tellichery. At the start of the 18th century, they constructed a small shrine in Tellichery for Lord Kodanda Rama.
Early in the 19th century, a powerful Goud Saraswat Brahmans merchant by the name of Devdas Bhandari donated the idol of Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy to the shrine. In 1831, a suitable temple was erected there in place of the previous shrine. His Majesty Srimad Sumatheendra Tirtha Swamiji performed this prathishta in 1831 AD at the Samvatrasra Vaishaka mass on Shukla Panchami, a Monday during the Punarvasu Nakshtra of the Shaka period. The fifteenth head of the Varanasi-based Sri Kashi Mutt Samsthan was H.H. Srimad Sumatheendra Tirtha. The deities of Lord Kodanda Rama, Venkaramana, and their divine consorts Sri Devi and Bhoomi Devi were also erected in addition to the primary deity of Lord Lakshmi Narasimha.
Lord Sri Lakshmi Narasimha is positioned at the top of the centre, flanked on either side by Sri Pattabhi Narasimha and Veera Vittala. Lord Hayagriva, Lord Varadaraja with his wives, and Gopalkrishna are on either side of Lord Kodanda Rama, Sita Devi, and Lakshmana on the second floor. Lord Venkataramana and his heavenly partners Sri Devi and Bhoodevi are at the lowest level. Sri Hanuman and Sri Garuda stand on either side of this group, and the Naga saligramas and devatas are set up in a separate Peetha beneath the Simhasana.
