Udupi Sri Krishna Temple
About Udupi Sri Krishna Temple
The Krishna Temple, also known as the Udupi Sri Krishna Matha, is one of the most auspicious temples devoted to Lord Krishna and is regarded as one of the most well-known pilgrimage sites in South India. Krishna’s idol is covered in jewels and has a golden chariot. The temple’s worship style is what distinguishes it. The Navagraha Kitiki is a silver-plated window with nine holes through which all prayers and ritualistic activities are conducted. The Shree Krishna Matha is surrounded by a temple called the Udupi Anantheshwara Temple. This temple has a 1,000-year history.
The temple encourages daily life and devotion in a manner similar to a functioning ashram. Daasa Sahitya, a genre of Udupi literature, was also created there. The administration and temple offerings are divided cyclically among the eight mathas every two years. They are referred to as Ashta Mathagalu as a whole. His idol has witnessed the same kind of thing because Krishna’s mother Yashoda wanted to see him assume the form of a child. The daily prayers at the Krishna Temple start with the blowing of a conch shell at 4:00 AM, drawing thousands of devotees there each year. Ramanavami, Deepavali, Krishnashtami, Hanuman Jayanti, Saptotsava or the Seven Utsavas (celebrated in January), and the Paryaya festival are just a few examples of festivals (once in every two years).

The History
The Krishna temple in Udupi is rife with lore. This sacred site was established in the 13th century by Shri Madhwacharya, the Vaishnavite Jagadguru and founder of the Dvaita school of Vedanta.According to legend, Lord Krishna’s idol was created by renowned architect Vishwakarma and later found by Madhwacharya. The saint was alerted one day that a ship sailing in the sea was in danger due to bad weather while he was saying his daily morning prayers on the shore of Malpe beach. With the help of his divine abilities, Shree Madhwacharya prevented the ship from sinking and found the clay-covered or gopichandana-covered idol of Krishna. According to what he said, the murti is positioned facing west (Paschimabhimukha), as opposed to the usual placement of God’s idols, which is facing east.
The legend of the Kanaka Kindi or the Window of Kanakadasa is another captivating one. An ardent follower of the Lord who lived in the 16th century was barred from seeing him. He began to protest by beginning to pray fervently at the back of the temple. Due to Kanaka’s overwhelming devotion, Lord Krishna cut a hole in the wall and caused his eastward-facing idol to face westward so that Kanaka could worship the Lord.
The Architecture
The Kanakadasa window, also known as the 9-holed snow-plated window, is connected to Chandrasala hall by a wall. The bells hanging over the arched entrance create a sublime atmosphere that the hall dedicates itself to. The earthen lamps that are kept inside emit a lovely glow. Nobody is permitted to approach the Lord Krishna idol. Thus, the previously mentioned 9-holed window is used for the Darshana.
Lord Hanumana is seated to one side of the room in a contemplative position. Chandrasala Hall is visible from a platform that has been raised with the aid of four pillars. It has a customary deepastambam that holds the ‘jyot,’ or sacred oil lamp. Shree Madhvacharya’s statue is to the right of the main sanctum, and to the north is the shrine to Lord Panduranga. Towards the east of the temple is where you’ll find Lord Vishnu’s Panchadhatu (5-metal) statue, which is seated on his Garuda and holds a conch and a discus. It creates the entrance to Shri Balkrishna’s sanctum sanctorum. Normally, the eastern gate is shut and only opens on Vijay Dashmi. At the southern entrance is the holy tank Madhwapushkarani.
